Self-drilling screws come in a wide variety of lengths and sizes. They can be easily identified by their unique pointed end or flute which is used to penetrate and drill through sheet metal. Self-drilling metal roofing screws are normally made in steel, which then goes through a series of post processes, one of which is hardening. Drilling points are categorized in different numbers (or No.’s), which designates its drilling capacity. The larger the number, the longer the drilling point and in general, the thicker steel can it penetrate. Thicker and heavier gauge steel also requires a larger gauge (wire dia.) screw in order to meet product test standards and building regulations.
